At Shadow Theatre, we love new plays.

And over the last few years Shadow Theatre has been building a play development program designed to serve writers, theatre artists and of course our audiences. Over the last two years we’ve been proud to present four world premieres: David Belke’s The Science of Disconnection and Next Year’s Man of Steel, Jocelyn Ahlf’s The Liars, and Leif Oleson-Cormack’s Meat Puppet (co-produced with Northern Light Theatre).  This season will see the premiere of Belinda Cornish’s delightful new comedy Little Elephants about a loving family whose greatest talent is a well practiced ability to avoid inconvenient truths.

New work arrives at Shadow Theatre in a number of ways. Sometimes we get plays mailed to us from playwrights across the country. We get phone calls or visits with pitches in mind or plays in hand. And sometimes we seek out writers whose work we believe should be seen and who we think should be supported. If we can see a place for the show in our diverse Shadow season, then the play is commissioned.

In the years ahead you can count on seeing at least one new play every season from not only our resident playwright, but new writers and established playwrights whose imagination, craft and enthusiasm have made us excited to see what they come with.

Did I mention we love new plays?

Shadow demands engagement!

Shadow Theatre is sophisticated, engaging, intimate, inventive and challenging. We believe in the ensemble spirit of of the theatre and in building connections between the audience and artist. We provide unexpected and thoughtful interpretations of new and existing works that have something important to say about the human condition. We appeal to those who are looking for theatre that delights, entices, engages and transports us into a world filled with ideas and feelings; a world where perspectives and perceptions are challenged.
